Judd Trump is the one-year ranking leader, tailed by Ronnie O'Sullivan, who is yet to confirm his participation in the event following a string of absences. Zhang Anda is locked down in the third seed spot, while the likes of Mark Williams, Mark Selby, Mark Allen and Ding Junhui have also made the cut.

The 2024 Johnstone’s Paint Players Championship commences on Monday with the top 16 players from the one-year rankings list in the draw. The lineup for Telford was only finalised late on Sunday evening following the conclusion of the Welsh Open. Gary Wilson beat Martin O’Donnell 9-4 to deny his fellow Englishman a spot in the Players Championship draw this week.

Prize, history, and format In its current guise, the Players Championship has been around since 2017, but the competition evolved from a previous incarnation as the Players Tour Championship Grand Final that ran between 2011 and 2016. For the first six editions, the field was determined by the order of merit on the now defunct minor-ranking PTC series. During those years, there were six different winners including the inaugural champion Shaun Murphy, Ding Junhui, and Mark Allen.

However, since 2017 the event was altered to boast the top-16 earners from the one-year rankings list overall, with Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump sharing two wins apiece from the first four stagings. John Higgins snapped that trend with a memorable triumph in 2021, with Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy emerging with the titles in the most recent editions. The packed snooker calendar shows no signs of letting up as we roll straight from the Welsh Open into the Players Championship.

The tournament has been pretty nomadic since taking on its current guise in 2017 and arrives in Telford this year for the first time. Just the top 16 on the one-year ranking list qualify for the big-money event, which means reigning champion Shaun Murphy will not be able to defend his title as he has not made it into the field. There are other big names missing out as well, with the likes of Neil Robertson, Kyren Wilson and world champion Luca Brecel having disappointing campaigns so far.
